Physicians are early adopters of mobile technology: 88% of respondents own smartphones and 54% use tablets in daily work 

A recent survey of physicians attempted to answer this question and found the result to be “help me help my patients.” While the Publicis Touchpoint Solutions/Sermo survey was small (250 physicians) and focused (physicians who use the social networking site Sermo), it does give us some insights.

An inspiring TEDxMongKok talk by most published mobile author Tomi Ahonen predicting the magic of Augmented Reality, the next mass media that he expects to be used actively by a Billion citizens in the next decade.

This is an area that I’m very optimistic about and I think it’s going to be much more pervasive than even Tomi is suggesting as AR isn’t neccessarily a personal mass media and so can be used “on us” without needing us as individuals to do anything eg. by someone else pointing a cameraphone at us to pull up our Facebook/Linkedin profile or as with the facial recognition security systems that are already being used on public transport systems in London and will by 2020 be much more widely explored for monitoring purposes at international borders etc.

Online treatment beneficial to heart disease patients | BMJ

Patients with vascular disease such as angina and heart disease can benefit from including an internet-based treatment programme on top of usual care, a study published on bmj.com suggests.

Researchers from the University Medical Center Utrecht in The Netherlands, therefore carried out a randomised controlled trial to assess whether including an internet-based programme would be effective in reducing vascular risk factors in patients with the disease.

The internet-based programme included a personalised website, mail communication via the website with a nurse practitioner, self-management support, monitoring of disease control and pharmacotherapy. The study lasted 12 months and included 330 participants.

Results show that after one year, Framingham Heart Scores had fallen 12% further among patients who took part in the internet-based programme, compared with controls. The Framingham Heart Score represents the predicted 10-years risk for coronary heart disease and is developed for patients free of vascular disease.

Becker’s Hospital Review  published an article providing 42 tips for building and promoting a hospital brand as offered by Dr. Rhoda Weiss, a healthcare consultant, editor of Marketing Health Services Magazine and a professor of healthcare marketing at UCLA.  Her suggestions are methods for creating relationships in order to build a brand.

Many of them your hospital may already be doing.  Some may not apply to your situation.  Some are operational and some are marketing.  But it is a list with basic, very good suggestions.

Peruse the list.  You may get some ideas that will help you build your hospital brand.

  1. Write welcome letters and call new staff
  2. Encourage staff with signage such as, “through these doors walk greatest staff”
